Question by Karl’s On Hiatus: In Terms Of Influence, Lasting Legacy, & Overall Impact On The Music World..?
How would You rank the following bands…?
My rankings, not as My taste, but as I feel they belong
1 Led Zeppelin
2 Pink Floyd
3 The Beatles
4 Pink Floyd
5 Jimi Hendrix
6 The Rolling Stones
7 Queen
8 Black Sabbath
9 The Who
10 AC/DC
Now, I’d like to see how you rank them, and any rants or explanations as to why You ranked them thus would be as welcome as sunshine in may.
If it was My taste half wouldn’t be there, and Sabbath would be #1.
Crap
Take out the extra Floyd…sorry
Try this, sorry
1 Led Zeppelin
2 Pink Floyd
3 The Beatles
4 Jimi Hendrix
5 The Rolling Stones
6 Queen
7 Black Sabbath
8 The Who
9 AC/DC
10 Bob Dylan
I’m bad for typos, my backspace key is a nub
Actually, Nirvana didn’t change rock, the record companies did by promoting the heck out of grunge.. Nirvana were just part of that along with AIC, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, etc. I can see maybe bumping Dylan to put them 10th though.
Sorry but the Moody Blues and Beach Boys don’t belong in the Top 50 to me, no offense
It’s a list of rock bands, not lounge singers.
The Doors may deserve it, and personally, I love Em. the Dead doesn’t, sorry

Dude what about Nirvana. They changed rock and you know it.
It doesn’t matter how much the record companies promoted grunge, if the bands weren’t good than grunge wouldn’t of been as big as it was. And nirvana was at the forefront of alternative rock.
beatles
led zepplin

As Objectively as I can TELL: #1. The Beatles. #2. The Stones. #3. Bob Dylan. #4. The Who. #5. Hendrix. #6. Pink Floyd. #7. Zeppelin. #8. Queen. #9. AC/DC. & #10. Black Sabbath… Take Note: You said “Influence & Impact on the Music World…” -And since many of the EARLIER Choices & names -Time Wise- went on to “influence” those later Groups, you HAVE To grant them a higher ranking- because their Impact is “cumulative” & greater over Time… You didn’t “Say”- this was a Popularity Contest… -But an OVERALL ranking by Legacy…
A much better list

2)Bob Dylan
3)Jimi Hendrix

Not true
Pet Sounds was what strongly influened the creation of Sgt Pepper
In their prime the Beach Boys were great albeit overlooked by rockers American band
The first time I saw them live was the night that the Fillmore East closed .and then I realized how good they really were.
1. The Beatles
2. The Sex Pistols
3. Nirvana
4. Jimi Hendrix
5. The Velvet Underground
6. Bob Dylan
7. Brian Johnson
8. The Smiths
9. Black Sabbath
10. KISS
Elvis has to be at the top of the list.
Led Zeppelin (transcendant of all genres, perfected whatever they did)
Jimi Hendrix (let’s face it, the electric guitar would be a lot less prevalent)
The Beatles (stylistic geniuses, they were always ahead of their time)
Black Sabbath (of course, there would be no metal without them)
Pink Floyd (urged on the experimental craze of progressive rock)
Bob Dylan (inspiration for most folk singers, very topical in nature)
Queen (were the first to include classical muisc into their own)
The Who (helped pave the way for punk rock, had great songwriting)
Rolling Stones (their longevity is great, but not extremely evolutionary)
AC/DC (they were just a rock band, and very good, but even more overrated)
Where the hell are the Doors? And the Grateful Dead?
The Doors exemplified the spirit of rock and roll, and the Grateful Dead would beat the Stones on the longevity (of course, prevented by the death of gerry garcia), but they both had better songwriting than half of the groups you presented us with, and they were far more evolutionary in those terms.
Actually, Nirvana were the first and only ones to coat that grunge music with elements of classic rock, generating huge amounts of musical intellect, but that’s not the point. They were creation rather than innovation.
In all honesty, though, you can’t judge innovativeness as a whole, or as one answer implied, by the timing of each band’s releases. The Beatles changed the music industry as a whole, but Hendrix changed the face of music as a whole, before even the Beatles caught onto it. Led Zeppelin combined the two, but in reality,. hardly any of them were influenced to a great degree by, let’s just say the Rolling Stones. Bands like Led Zeppelin and The Doors were DIRECTLY influenced by the bands/artists who influenced earlier bands, i.e. Muddy Waters, Willie Dixon, Howlin’ Wolf, B.B. King, Louis Prima, if you wanna get right down to it. In fact, Dixon, Wolf, and Waters directly influenced MANY elements of modern day rock and roll (well, that of the sixties and seventies), for instance; the rolling stones gain their namesake from a song by Muddy Waters, and Led Zeppelin and/or The Doors both remade many classics such as “Bring It On Home (Dixon),” “Back Door Man (Wolf),” “Whole Lotta Love (Dixon),” etc.
P.S. Elvis was not at the top of the list, by any means. Muddy Waters and BB King influenced rock and roll before rock and roll music even existed. All Elvis did was popularize it by bringing it to the masses, mainly because he was white. That doesn’t take away from his talent, but he has done absolutely nothing compared to Lennon, Hendrix, Pagey, Morrison, Iommi, Dylan, McCartney, etc.
Once again, how could anybody make a list like this without including The Doors? The songwriting, the attitude, the keyboards, the artistic resonance, and the perfect assortment of classics from their one transcendant catalogue. They were the Beatles of the underground, and they were possibly the best band ever, as far as musical diversity goes, compared only to Led Zeppelin in that respect.
The reason I granted Led Zeppelin with the number one spot was their mastering of all genres. The Beatles, despite their musical genius, for instance, sounded like The Beatles all the time, but Zeppelin could pull off any genre as profoundly as those who excelled only in that genre. For example, take “Bring It On Home,” “Down by the Seaside,” “Babe, I’m Gonna Leave You,” “Whole Lotta Love,” “Dazed and Confused,” “D’yer Mak’er,” “Since I’ve Been Loving You,” “Immigrant Song,” “Rock and Roll.” Then, count the genres you’ll find; from progressive/experimental to flat out delta blues, from heavy metal to country licks (but with groove), from spanish guitar skills to pure rock and roll. Nobody could do it better or go down heavier than Led Zeppelin.
That’s my 2 cents.
Peace.

the only bands about which it appears we strongly disagree are ac/dc and pink floyd…ac/dc to me had a lot of influence over modern hard rock, it’s mostly not good music but the truth is there are many ac/dc wannabe bands and that to me defines influence, and also their style imo changed the face of what rock and roll was at the time, not that they were doing anything that hadn’t been done before but they were the rebirth as zep had broken up and the stones were heading downhill…on the other hand, while pink floyd was certainly a very good and very unique band, they had a style which is all their own and imo kinda takes them out of the influence category completely
also, i kinda ignored the “lasting legacy” portion, imo they all have a very strong lasting legacy and the huge fan bases of each band attest to that
Okay,# 1 being the best,and # 10 being not so best…
